Hello, Moto
Update: Moto Z is the new modular Android phone that acts as Motorola’s 2016 and it was announced at Lenovo Tech World this week. Here’s what we know.
There are actually two Moto Z phones, the regular Moto Z and the Moto Z Force, the later of which is exclusive to the US and Verizon. Both handsets have modular accessories that work interchangeably.
Its MotoMods, which snap on with magnetics, sound exciting, but hold up. You might not be able to get this Android Marshmallow phone right away. It’ll only come to one US network at first: Verizon.
That puts the official Moto Z release date for most parts of the world in autumn. However, there may be enough reason to wait for this particular Snapdragon 820-powered phone. Let’s dive in.
Release date and price
The Moto Z release date is this summer in the US, but exclusive to the Verizon. Sorry AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint customers, Verizon has the lock on this one initially.
It will come unlocked to US and the rest of the world starting in September, according to Motorola. Its MotoMods accessories that snap on will be available at the same time.
It’s not too long of a wait, but the Moto Z may end up getting overshadowed by the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7S Plus in September following its soft launch with Verizon in the summer. It could be a sleeper hit.
Don’t expect the Moto Z price to cut you any breaks. While the official cost hasn’t been announced, the phone will carry a flagship premium given its specs and modular accessory innovation.
Specs
Moto Z has a 5.5-inch quad HD display that gives it a 2560 x 1440 resolution and 535 pixels per inch. It has a AMOLED panel, like the previous Moto X, and it shows with bright, vibrant tones.
Underneath that 2K screen is a Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB of RAM and an embedded Adreno 530 GPU. It runs the same chipset at the LG G5 and Samsung Galaxy S7, among other phones.
On back is a 13MP camera, with optical image stabilization and laser autofocus. It’s a lower resolution than the 21MP camera on the Moto Z Force and missing some features like phase detection autofocus.
It’ll be slightly thinner than the Moto Z Force and lack its shatterproof screen. It’ll also come in two colors, black and gold, but not rose gold, also exclusive to the Moto Z Force.
