Apple announced the new iPad Pro 9.7 today, meaning the it was able to fit all of the outstanding specs of the iPad Pro 12.9 into what’s essentially an iPad Air 3.
It has a more manageable 9.7-inch frame, is 6.1mm thin and entire tablet weighs under one pound, according to Apple. All of the Pro-level accessories work with it, too, including the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard.
That’s great news for artists and enterprise users alike who wants a more powerful iPad with top-of-the-line specs, or as Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller calls it, “grunt.”
While the new iPad Pro display is a familiar 9.7 inches, it uses what Apple calls a True Tone display. This means is has four-channel sensors to dynamically adjust the white balance of the display.
It’s able to match the light around you for a more natural and accurate, paper-white viewing experience. Along with iOS 9.3‘s blue-light-battling Night Shift mode, it’s a far more advanced the tablet tablet screen.

Apple put some numbers behind its new 9.7-inch iPad Pro display. It’s 25% brighter and 40% less reflective than the iPad Air 2 screen.
All of that means it’s easier to see everything indoors and out, including in less than ideal sunny conditions. You’re no longer forced to work and sketch indoors, but you probably still will.
It also has the same wider color gamut as the iMac with Retina 5K display. Apple says this will deliver a 25% greater color saturation for more vivid colors over the iPad Air 2.
The specs have also been upgraded to match the larger iPad Pro 12.9. It has Apple’s powerful A9X chip and a four-speaker audio system. That’s a big step over the Air 2’s stuck-together stereo speakers.

Of course, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro will cost a bit more when it launches in early April. It’ll be sold in colors of silver, space gray, gold and a new rose gold metallic finish.
In the US, it starts $599, but that’s for the entry-level 32GB. Apple has thankfully phased out the 16GB model. There’s also a 128GB option for $749 and new 256GB edition for $899. All three have Wi-Fi and cellular variants.
In the UK, it starts at £499 for the 32GB Wi-Fi smaller iPad Pro, £619 for 128GB and £739 for 256GB. In Australia, its costs AU$899 for 32GB, AU$1,149 for 128GB and AU$1,399 for 256GB.
