Samsung’s flagships already have minimal bezel to the left and right of the screen, especially curved phones like the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, but it seems the company is working towards getting rid of the bezels above and below the display too, and that the Samsung Galaxy S8 could be 90% screen on the front.
That’s up from 70-80% on most smartphones, and would likely require most sensors, including the fingerprint scanner, to be built into the screen.
And the source of the rumor is strong, as it’s based on a comment made by Park Won-sang, a principal engineer at the display-making unit of Samsung, who, according to The Investor, said: “Samsung Display would roll out a full-screen display whose display area ratio reaches more than 90% next year”.
It’s happening, but maybe not on the S8
Notably he doesn’t specify that this display will be built for the Galaxy S8, or even that it will be commercially available – it could just be a prototype, but it’s clearly an area of focus for the company, so a bezel-less display is likely in the Galaxy S range’s future and could be here as soon as the S8.
Even if Samsung does all but eliminate bezels it won’t be the first to do so, as the Xiaomi Mi Mix has already launched with a 91.3% screen-to-body ratio, but this could be just the beginning for Samsung, as a Samsung Display researcher told The Investor that the company may look towards a 99% ratio in the coming years.
