Similar boat. Though the 5X seems overpriced given it's heritage, name and competition in that price bracket.

The Z5 Compact looks good though the 720p screen puts me off (I believe the ppi is less than my 5" 441ppi S4 atm too) and the price is still in the ballpark of other flagship devices which seems odd given I'd thought the screens were the most expensive component.

  2. Bethel Heidenreich says:

They are the only phones out there who comes wiht a great punch of performance in a small package, if you dont count in iPhone 5s from 2013 ofc

  3. Dr. Cyril VonRueden Sr. says:

720p screen is a pro, not a con. Also, camera hardware may be impressive, but the picture processing algorithms and the lens are terrible! The EIS is fantastic though and beats LG's and Samsung's OIS.

  4. Mr. Agustin Cummings says:

Another funny humanoid. Can you distinguish pixels on 720p 4.6" screen? I have tried to do that with naked eyes in 10 cm from screen – image is smooth, can't distinguish pixels. Why this BS about 1080p on such a small screen? I have 1080p 23" computer screen… and here we are talking about 4.6". Stupidity.

  5. Chauncey Stark says:

Why reviewer speaks about things he doesn't understand?
    1) I have 4.55" or 4.6" screen with 720×1280 pixels in old Xperia and I can't distinguish pixels with naked eye in 10 cm from screen. So, don't write this crap about shame on SONY about NoFullHD screen on 4.6" screens. And FullHD on Z5's 5.2" is too much, useless. And 4K screen in Z5 Premium is… clear marketing, waste of resources. 4K on 5.5" needs to be viewed under the magnifier to see all 4K details.
    2) My old Xperia doesn't have corner bumpers and successfully withstood numerous drops on asphalt and concrete from about 1m. I am suspecting my phone has internal absorber all around the frame.

  6. Godfrey White says:

Got the Z5 compact on release day and have not regretted it once. Can confirm 32Gb on the Z5C in the UK.

  7. Liliane Bahringer says:

Still tho, I'm not a fan of apple iPhones, but we blame them for the low resolution screen, we should still do the same for Sony. 720p isn't acceptable for a flagship phone in 2015

  8. Hilma Labadie PhD says:

My last two phones have been the nexus 4 and the nexus 5. Just switched to the z5 compact for its size and battery life, and it's awesome. The updates on nexus phones are pretty cool, but they're getting too big for me and the battery life has been awful.

  9. Kraig Pacocha says:

Hehehe, Motorola has addressed your request with the Droid Turbo 2. Shatterproof screen with 4 year guarantee. Everyone should follow. Shattering phones should be history!

  10. Rahsaan Wolf says:

Its Techradar do you expect anything else from them? Even if Apple laucnhed the next iPhone with a 480p display they would simply say the same as now "Price high for a low-res screen". Apples Retina dsiplays are faaar behind the competition nowadays…. Atleast on their phones

  11. Patsy Gutkowski says:

Thankfully someone else has also noticed. I was going to mention that. James should correct that.

  12. Rafaela Wolff says:

Thanks for that, It's good to hear a positive viewpoint having moved from Nexus to Xperia.
I think it'll be partly down to getting hold of them both an seeing which she likes the feel of to be honest!

  13. Jayne Lakin PhD says:

It shouldn't, the screen looks amazing in person.

  14. Mr. Torrance Hermiston says:

i'm not really biased towards any company, I own a Macbook Pro and a Galaxy S5, but Apple is getting hate for the 6S screen, and the the Z5 compact is even lower res than that. Plus, it's a bit of a chunky monkey

  15. Mr. Imani Johns II says:

If you look into the physics behind it, all the glass is hit and miss, you can have it land gently on just the right spot in the glass and the entire thing will basically explode.

The iPhone is still the best in a screen that is functional after the glass breaks.

  16. Lilly Johnson says:

I bet if they just wrote 1080p on it and left it at 720p, you'd be claiming how amazing it is! There is no need for 1080p on a 4.6" screen.

  17. Kaley Gulgowski Jr. says:

I like the objective nature of your comments.

  18. Kylee Trantow says:

Had the Z5C since launch (bought direct from the sony store) and haven't regretted the purchase at all. Big phone power & features in a phone that's a sensible size. The differences from my old HTC One M7 are very, very apparant. Not sure what the review comments are about with boom-sound on the HTC, I find the Z5C to be louder and easier to hear. As with any purchase like this it would be advisable to find a display model to play around with before jumping brands.

  19. Shanie Altenwerth says:

"Out of the big manufacturer recent releases, the only flagship device still stuck on a 720p display is the Moto G, which costs about a third of the price of the Xperia Z5 Compact." – And the iPhone, which is one of the most expensive phones and half the world uses it.

  20. Emilio DuBuque says:

for some reason, i don't find this phone very attractive in looks or as a purchase. a 720p screen and chunky build just put me off for some reason

  21. Karlee Toy says:

My girlfirend's phone is up for renewal and I'm between the Z5 Compact and the Nexus 5X.
Neither of us are fans of massive phones, so concentrating on the compact market, which as this article correctly states, is fittingly rather small currently.

I like the Z5 Compact because it's waterproof, micro SD, camera and potentially better battery. The Sony Android images since 5 (Lollipop) have been pretty good too; almost standard-looking.

I like the 5X because it's stock Android (updated first), better fingerprint scanner USB type C port (for a phone you'll have for 2 years I think this is important), full HD screen.

I think the Z5 may be the winner, mainly because of the storage options. I have the Z3 Compact currently and it is a good device. Fairly robust too.
Girlfriend currently have a Nexus 4 and that's still going strong, nothing wrong with it at all really.

  22. Prof. Pedro Nienow IV says:

Is it really worth the price when you can get galaxy s6s and LG G4s for the same amount

  23. Raegan Stehr says:

I've seen the Customer Service complaint levelled at Sony in various comments sections and find it odd. I've had to send my Z3 Compact to Sony twice (which isn't a great start I know?!) due to an issue with the headphone jack and both times I've had it back, free of charge within a week. Both times they replaced the back panel too due to scratching and the fact, I assume, that they have to take it off so might as well improve the looks. Questionable build quality re. the jack but excellent, highly recommended customer service from Sony.

  24. Abbey Stark says:

I've got a Z3 compact and it's bounced off the floor pretty well so far. Some times I'd definitely have expecting it to smash.
    Really can't complain.

I think phones in general could do with being more robust, but would we ever replace them if they were?

  25. Lisette Terry says:

Iphone 6s does not have a full HD display.
