Why is everything an OR on this site. I use both. Samsung SSD for my OS and frequently used programs and a large spinner to store pictures/videos/etc. They both have their place in a good setup

With all the known advantages, there is one BIG disadvantage for SSD…DATA retention lifetime!! The charge dissipates over the time.

I trust USB disk for back of data than SSD. Though I prefer SSD for laptop.

Interesting article.  However, I’ve done a large amount of work building data centres and SSD are being moved into large data centers as even that their cost is more for the amount of space, the heat they produce and the energy they use is much less.  This doesn’t include that they are much faster then even the top of the line spinning disk.  Given that reduction in space/weight, cooling and energy are very big costs over the life of these disks the saving in all the places I’ve worked are VERY large.  So given that data centers are consumming a very large amount of disk and now SSD’s I believe that spinning metal will be gone a lot sooner given the is real major dollar savings as well as access speed then this article is saying.

No one’s trying to be smart. The article is just pointing out when SSDs are forecast to finally overtake HDDs. Sure it’s been a foregone conclusion for years, but it’s only now finally happening.

You don’t say! It’s been happening for years now. Even the Surface Pro came with the “chip” as you call it. You don’t need to be smart to know that HDD’s are out.

@Technoomage As price comes down and capacity I believe you are correct for datacenters and most servers. However they will still be more expensive than traditional hard drives for quite some time.  I think large hard drives will still be a viable product where you need a lot of cheap storage. They will be around longer for consumer grade PCs. We will start to see most PCs with a SSD as the system drive and a hard drive for bulk storage. Most laptops will be SSD only because of the many benefits to not having a Hard drive that can crash and laptops usually don’t need as much storage due to how they are actually used.

SSDs are amazingly fast compared to Hard Drives. I have put SSDs in 10 year old laptops and they run almost as good as a new laptop.
