Is it? Because LG claims only 0.8% per hour and Samsung 1% with quite a few reviews showing it uses more. So the fact that LG managed to make this LCD so efficient in always on mode tells me that Samsung's isn't as efficient as it could be. So as far as the S7 consuming less battery because its screen is more "efficient"? I don't know….

There's only 2 types of people I've ever known that constantly harped about having a full metal design. 1. Apple fanboys who were grasping at anything they could to criticize an Android phone, and 2. Critics/reviewers. Other than those, I don't know anyone personally who has ever cared about it. The day that Samsung converted the Galaxy to a full metal design (thereby eliminating the removable battery) was the day they lost me as a long time customer.

  3. Darrion Witting says:

not a full metal design, sorry

  4. Lessie Moore says:

This is a 3 1/2 out of 5 stars phone and that is being generous.4 1/2 out of 5 stars?B.S.

  5. Garret Marquardt says:

After a GSM arena battery test, it's been actually proven that the always on feature on the G5 is more efficient.

  6. Dr. Gus Nolan says:

I mean sure, 5% battery drain per 8 hours for Samsung and 1% per hour on the G5 equates to Samsung having 60% better performance. for a 10 hour day that's equivalent to 3.75% more battery — which in the whole scheme of things is not that much. And regardless, this feature can be turned off on both devices. I'm solely confused why a togglable feature is listed as a con.

  7. Hanna Smith says:

I would have actually preferred if they used the same build material as their V10 but I guess aluminum is still okay. I'll also miss the rear buttons. They were so convenient and much better than side buttons.

To be honest, I was kinda hoping to see the Galaxy S7 and HTC One (10?) as viable options but a removable battery is a must for me. It feels good never having to worry about battery life. 🙂

  8. Prof. Christophe Schneider IV says:

Yup can't for the life of me understand the fuss of the always on feature since you can disable it. I bet if it didn't have it, they would say "Oh LG can't consider itself a competitor when it doesn't offer an always-on screen". It's really ridiculous.

  9. Morgan Thompson says:

Its not a case on the G4 its the actual back of the phone.

  10. Osborne Shanahan says:

Watched it. TL/DR: you get an app drawer by switching to "Easy Home" screen view.

The video doesn't make it clear whether you sacrifice any functionality by going to Easy Home. Most android devices come with the option to simplify the interface for novice or (let's face it) older users, and that's what "Easy Home" sounds like. If so, it's just about the weirdest place to put something that's desired mostly by Android lovers and veteran users.

  11. Jermain Padberg IV says:

Well you don't have to buy the accessories. The G5 is not its accessories it's a phone first and foremost. To say it's a mistake because of the accessories is ill conceived to say the least. If you don't want the accessories don't get them. The phone is brilliant in its own right.

  12. Lionel Bednar V says:

Samsung doesn't have a Micro SD slot or Side volume buttons?

  13. Hardy Lehner says:

Looking at the trend of sales over the past 2 years, I'd say Huwaei would be better bet than HTC when making the nexus.

  14. Prof. Bryce Osinski says:

Android Police "The G5 feels like a tacit admission from LG that the company simply can't compete directly with Samsung in the realm of design, ruggedness, battery life, camera performance, or even software features right now. I realize this comes across as a brutal assessment, but I don't want to sugarcoat it by pretending the G5's primary competitor doesn't exist. That's not fair to anyone. The LG G5 simply is not as good a phone as the Galaxy S7. There may be niche cases to be made for it, but for the vast majority of consumers, I see absolutely no reason to consider the G5 when it is even remotely close to the S7 in price. Hell, I honestly don't see a reason to get this over the increasingly-affordable Nexus 5X. At least the 5X gets OS updates direct from Google and has an overall better camera, not to mention a much more palatable design. The battery life is probably about the same, too.

I have rarely given a "do not buy" to a modern, high-end smartphone, but the G5 really is trying me here. It starts to push up against the line of "for this amount of money, this is a bad phone." Does the G5 have redeeming qualities? Sure, but you do have to look for them. The wide-angle camera is a novelty no one else can yet claim, and the chin modules, for what they are, are unique. And it's the only modern flagship phone with a removable battery, something that is near and dear to the hearts of many of LG's modern fans.

As to the accessories and chin modules? I realize there is a desire any time a novel hardware feature launches to "give it a chance," but in my opinion, LG has not adequately demonstrated why anyone needs any of these things or, more specifically, why LG needs to build them. They're an illusion of ecosystem and of specialness – an attempt to make the G5 look like more than an ordinary smartphone. Any smartphone can have an extended battery case, camera buttons are not a game-changer. Any smartphone can control a novelty R/C robot, see Sphero. Any smartphone can do basic VR, and much more cheaply, see Cardboard (and Samsung inarguably does it much better with Gear VR anyway). 360-degree cameras will be coming fast and furious to the market soon enough, and while getting one for free is great (as LG has offered as a pre-order perk here in the US), when has LG ever been at the forefront of the camera or action cam business? As to the DAC/amplifier chin, I'm not going to pick a fight with audiophiles again, but I think we can agree no ordinary consumer has need of such a thing.

  15. Alfred Hauck says:

The LG G4 was all plastic, the leather you saw was just a case. The LG G5 has similiar cases available however it's a dumb case. For real protection look at the new Unicorn Beetle Pro, it's not only nice looking but it's tough. Some others, http://www.androidcentral.com/

  16. Allan Collier says:

When you buy a G4 you specify what back you want.
There are different colours of leather which in themselves are different thickness's with different feeling finishes.
Then there is the standard titanium plastic back.
I ordered a black leather one which came with the standard titanium back in the box also.
Some cases for the G4 attach to the phone in the same way a different back would as you describe.
Basically a folio flip front covering attached to a back plate.
Other cases available are fully enclosing cases that encase the whole phone leather back and all. Just like any other phone.

  17. Mr. Keeley Leffler says:

These reviews seem to be too biased. Firstly, the placement of the headphone jack is personal preference and secondly, in the S7 review you say the placement of the bottom speaker is "not a huge issue" but here you make it seem like it's a death sentence. Really? Why didn't you speak about the audio quality from that speaker in the G5? I have seen a review that has said it is very impressive and much better than the S7's. Why not mention that? Oh wait, it's not a Samsung right? Lastly, the always on display still uses less juice than the S7 and is more useful. The S7's is just a battery draining screen saver not worth leaving on. In addition there is a video on YouTube where a guy takes time lapse shots in the dark with both cameras on the G5 and it comes out absolutely amazing. Samsung's S7 will give good low light performance but loses detail in good light and on zooming in due to lower megapixels. The G5 can be good in all scenarios. Excellent in low light and good light where detail is needed.

  18. Easter Beer DDS says:

Actually it's both, it comes with a plastic backing but you can buy a leather one which provides more protection as it's thicker. Mine had a leather lid that fliped around, so it was also a case.

  19. Miracle Rath says:

The ball! It's all about the ball! The rolling bot. You can have your own r2d2 now.

  20. Ottilie Rau says:

Removable battery, microsd card slot, AND they've moved the volume buttons to the side?? Goodbye Samsung Galaxy phones. It was a nice ride while it lasted.

  21. Jaleel Tremblay says:

Yeah honestly I don't understand the complains so much.Looks like a normal phone to me. I'm very happy with my G5. I got an Otterbox case for it, so I don't care too much about the looks go it honestly, The phone itself is excellent, stacks up great to any other phone. That's what I really care about.

  22. Felicita Lehner says:

Really just for volume button placement? I had a G2 before my G5, and while it's a little odd now, it's definitely not a make or break thing for me lol. Also the fingerprint reader is pretty big. With two cameras, flash, and fingerprint reader, adding more to the back would of been a bit much maybe.

  23. Prof. Jaime Roob I says:

I do and your right 🙂

  24. Andres McCullough says:

Never really understood why reviewers mean that "A full metal design" is a pro? The G4 with it's leather and plastic looks and feels better than any full metal phones out there. And "No" I do not own a G4 🙂

  25. Lee Graham says:

I do personally agree with you that an optional feature should not be listed as a con, I was merely stating what I think their reasoning was for listing it as such.
