This is a solid first DSLR option.  I’ve owned the D3300 and the D3400 seems like they’ve fixed some of the major issues, mainly the speed of Live View photography with the new lenses.  I wish Nikon would fix their camera bridge setup.  I have the Wi-Fi adapter for my D3300 and it’s slow, slow enough that I never use it.  Even when using my phone as a remote, it’s terribly slow.  It’s a lot faster for me to setup shots using my tripod and then using a wireless IR remote to actually take the shot.

Still, for a camera in the $700 price range with two kit lenses, it’s hard to beat.  Yeah, it doesn’t have 4K video recording but neither does any other DSLR in this price range.  You have to jump up beyond the Canon T6S (which is $1000+ with a single lens kit) to get 4K recording from them.  I ended up spending $649.99 on my D3300 with two lens kits, a Nikon bag (which is big enough to hold everything), and their Wi-Fi adapter.  If the D3400 only improves on some of the D3300’s quirks, it’s worth it as an entry level DSLR that is going to outperform comparably priced models from Canon and even have more features.

If you compare them to the new Pentax K-70, all of these models come up short:

Pentax K-70: Full weather resistant treatment, real pentaprism, articulating screen, ISO to 102400, accurate AF down to EV -3, 6 fps, in body stabilization good for ~4.5 f stops that works with all lenses, lens compatibility with every Pentax lens ever made, 24.2mp Sony hybrid sensor, etc, etc.

@Beyondcom  The Pentax is also more expensive, it’s about $650 for the body only whereas you can find the D3400 for $699 with two lens kits ($549 with one lens kit).

As a Nikon fan, I think this was a dumb release. No 4K, only 9 AF points, very little improvement over the 3300. No way. Just get the 5300 for cheaper. It’s extremely foolish for Nikon to release something like this. Most people getting a 3XXX series camera don’t have a huge stock of lenses

It’s extremely foolish for Nikon to release something like this. Most people getting a 3XXX series camera don’t have a huge stock of lenses, so they will buy whatever camera has the best specs. In this case they will get a Sony and invest in Sony lenses. Then when they spend more money in the future to update the body, they will still buy another Sony because they’ve already invested in the lenses. Anyway, stupid move Nikon.
