False Color monitoring would be nice indeed.

  2. Charles says:

What gets lost in all of the tech spec chats here is how consistently uninspiring and underwhelming the GH series image is. Everything I’ve seen from the GH5 so far has only reinforced that statement. Lovely paper specs, underwhelming image.

    1. Marcel van Leeuwen says:

that is mostly part of the lenses that are used. they are all still lenses which are a bit too sharp. When using something like a Veydra lens it looks much better.

      1. Frank Hegyi says:

I agree. Put the right lenses on the GH cameras and they’re totally different.

    2. Bob Ross says:

I agree. The ice video looks very much like… well… regular video. I’m hoping to see something a little more cinematic with a bit more sparkle as we get closer to the release. The specs are great, but yeah, these videos don’t really excite me at all.

      1. Newsshooter says:

Bear in mind several things. A lot of the demo footage is 4K 60 because that’s what Panasonic want to showcase, not 24 or 25 fps. All the footage I’ve seen uses modern Panasonic lenses, no Speedboosters or vintage stuff. That and the camera is still not finished. That said, I’m not expecting the overall look to be radically different to a GH4 in HD mode – just higher definition and more gradeable. Time will tell.

        1. Adam Wilt says:

Aside from the 60p, there’s lots of edge enhancement in the “Hand Cut” piece—it’s gorgeously done, but it definitely has a “video” aesthetic. Turn the sharpening down, dial back the contrast a bit, and the GH4 (at least; haven’t seen the GH5 yet) renders a much more “cinematic” image than the out-of-box defaults allow.

          1. Newsshooter says:

            Yep. Agreed.

What cameras near its price do you prefer?

      1. Charles says:

The A7S gives a much nicer image imho. It’s far more filmic.
It’ll be interesting to see some V-Log tests in 10 bit. But I’ve never really been overly impressed by the GH series image if I’m honest.
Sony’s Alpha line gives a much more organic and filmic image if you ask me. I’d shockingly take an 8 bit camera that actually creates beautiful images right off the sensor, over a 10 bit camera that looks like an iPhone, every single day of the week.
With that said, the specs really are nuts!! I just can’t ignore how unimpressive the actual footage is (in my eyes, at least).

        1. Charles says:

Apologies if I sounded like a dick then. Wasn’t intended. If you like the GH image, then fair play. As with most things in our industry, when it comes to the overall look, it’s largely subjective.

          1. CrocanLB says:

I agree with you as well.
Lately internet/pixel people have started to compare only specs not the results.

          2. Chris says:

Lately? lol. There is an entire subculture of enthusiasts who do nothing but compare specs. I doubt even 1% of them have used the cameras they are complaining about and base their opinions entirely on spec sheets. They’ve been around forever.

          3. CrocanLB says:

with word lately I meant unspecified past time:)).

    4. The Dude says:

Agreed! I’ve preordered but not really seeing anything truly mind blowing and skin tones to me seem a little… off.

  3. T Nails says:

I think the camera’s probably just fine. I wouldn’t blame the tools on the uninspiring footage. At some point I’d like to see how it plays with a speed booster. For my uses, branded content and dramatic, I’ve no affinity with M4/3. It’s neither here nor there kind of format. With a Speedbooster and the extra stop, now that could be something worth looking into.
