What happens when a 16-year-old dog finds the half-kilo bag of dog treats that you’re going to test the Furbo with and decides to eat them all, right now? It turns out that dog treats – recommended no more than five to ten a day – result in what can only be described as poomageddon when ingested in large quantities, along with a very sheepish looking canine.
Meet Zoey, the guiltiest dog in the world:
Thankfully, at 16, Zoey isn’t badly behaved, and mostly just wants a nice long sleep in her basket. She doesn’t bark much, either, which is a blessing to our neighbours. But we do have to leave her at home now and then for a few hours, and like all dog owners we worry. Is she barking a lot? Is she up to no good? Is the cat bullying her?
Enter Furbo, described as “the world’s first treat-tossing dog camera”. Furbo is a kind of electronic babysitter for your dog, which lets you watch them via a smartphone app, talk to them through a small speaker, and – as the description suggests – toss them treats.
Setting Furbo up is incredibly easy. Download the smartphone app (iOS and Android are supported – Windows Phone user, you’re out of luck) and plug the Furbo into a USB power supply. The app detects your new Furbo via Bluetooth and you then connect it to Wi-Fi. At this point, setup is complete.
You can watch your dog from anywhere in the world, through a 720p HD camera that also supports night vision. It has a 120-degree wide-angle lens, and a 4x digital zoom, so if you position the Furbo well, there’s a decent chance you can cover most of a room. The camera is angled downwards, so it’s best positioned on a table or shelf than on the floor. The camera supports the capture of stills and video if you want to record your dog doing tricks or getting up to bad things.
There’s two-way audio, too, which means you can talk to your dog (although, in our case, the dog’s slight deafness meant Zoey ignored us most of the time) and hear if it’s barking. Usefully, you get alerts on your phone if Furbo thinks your dog is barking while you’re out.
And then, of course, there’s the treat dispenser or, as I prefer to think of it, the dog-pacification cannon. The mechanism for throwing treats is quite similar to catching Pokémon in Pokémon Go, as you “flick” the treat on the screen to throw it to the dog.
Furbo review: Verdict
All this is great, but does it add up to £199-worth of great? Furbo sounds like a gimmick for overprotective dog owners, but it’s both well made and practical. The design is difficult to knock over (important if you have a larger dog and place it within paw-reach), and it works well. Camera and sound quality are good. Nothing about it feels cheap, which given the price is a very good thing.
Whether it’s worth the money depends on your dog and its behaviour. If it’s a barker and needs occasional calming down when you’re not in the house, Furbo will be worth buying if only to keep the neighbours sweet. For us, with a very placid 16-year-old who prefers her basket to running around, Furbo delivers simple reassurance and an occasional sweet photo – and that makes it a less worthwhile purchase.
