UK retailer Carphone Warehouse has cut the price of the Alcatel Pixi 3 (3.5) smartphone to £0 for Black Friday, making it the cheapest smartphone in the UK at the time of writing.
The offer seems to be a coordinated attempt by Alcatel and Carphone Warehouse to boost its market share in the UK by flooding the lower end of the market with the most affordable mobile.
Alcatel ranked third among mobile brands in the UK behind Google and Samsung according to research published earlier this year by GFK analysts.
Although the mobile itself costs nothing, you still need to buy a £15 top-up in order to grab that deal.
The upside is that all Carphone Warehouse smartphones are usually unlocked; the Pixi 3 (3.5) was unveiled almost four years ago and is a 3G-only handset running an old version of Android (4.4.2 – Kit Kat).
It works great as a disposable, emergency or festival smartphone which can also be used as a Mi-Fi hotspot, a security camera, to buy another smartphone or for many other uses.
The £15 PAYG credit package from EE gives you 7GB of data, 500 minutes and unlimited text for a month as well as EE MTV Trax (music streaming), free data boosts and EE Roam Like Home service.
